Hi Lara,
Love your post! I think I have a list of the perfect ingredients for great reading instruction. Here is a list of the top 10 (12 really because I just couldn't limit myself to 10) runaway food stories that I have used in the past.
Click here for the Top 10 Runaway Food Stories list
Of course there are other great runaway stories like The Runaway Dreidel by Leslea Newman and Stella Louella's Runaway Book by Lisa Campbell Ernst that don't feature edible footloose characters. And if you're doing a gingerbread unit, you might want to check out The Gingerbread Pirates or The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School. But, back to your original question...it sounds like you want to use these books for some great literacy instruction. Don't forget (shameless self-promotion coming up) we have a reading unit at CoreStand that features runaway food stories including my all-time favorite, The Gingerbread Girl by Lisa Campbell Ernst.
Hope this helps you "cook" up some reading fun!
Frances
